What is the best way to cook and eat asparagus?

In our opinion, the best way to cook and eat asparagus is to roast it in the oven. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200ºC). Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus and lay them on a baking sheet, season with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil. Bake for 10-15 minutes until lightly browned and easily pierced with a fork. Enjoy asparagus simply with a squeeze of lemon juice or as part of a main dish.

What goes well with asparagus?

Some popular dishes that go well with asparagus include roasted potatoes, roasted mushrooms, quinoa, couscous, pasta, rice, salad, grilled fish, and chicken.

FAQs

What is the best way to cook and eat asparagus? ›

Asparagus is great quickly stir-fried or sautéed over high heat. You could sauté spears in butter or olive oil with delicious results, but throwing some chopped herbs or sliced chiles into the pan adds wonderful flavor. Both of these methods produce juicy asparagus that retains its crunch.

How many stalks of asparagus should you eat? ›

For asparagus, a standard serving size is six medium spears, a 1/2 cup of pieces, or just over three ounces cooked. For only 20 calories, you get a lot of nutrients!

Does asparagus get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

Does asparagus get softer the longer you cook it? Yes, it does. But you don't want to cook it too long or it will be soggy. That's fine when using in a soup, but not so much as a roasted side.

Why do you soak asparagus in water? ›

I soak all asparagus first in cold water. I trim the ends and then rinse the stalks and let them sit in cold water for five minutes. It hydrates the asparagus, and they cook more quickly, for they are already wet with some moisture within them.

What are three ways to cook asparagus? ›

Blanching, roasting, and grilling are my three go-to cooking methods, but you can also sauté asparagus for a frittata or pasta or poach whole spears for a quick dinner side dish. I even like it simmered into soup.

What organs does asparagus help? ›

Asparagus contains potassium, an important nutrient for keeping your heart, bones, kidneys and nerves functioning and healthy. You may be surprised to learn that this stalky vegetable also consists of a compound called asparaptine, which may help improve blood flow, in turn lowering blood pressure.

How do you cook asparagus so it doesn't get soggy? ›

Overcooking It

Because it only takes a few minutes to cook, keep a close eye on it to avoid soggy, limp stems as the outcome. To avoid overcooking, take it out of the oven or off the stove a minute or so before you think it's done. Another way to prevent overcooking is to shock the asparagus in an ice bath.

What is the healthiest way to eat asparagus? ›

Try adding shredded, raw asparagus to pasta dishes and salads. Alternatively, enjoy the spears lightly steamed or sautéed in a frittata, or as a stand-alone side dish. Asparagus is a nutritious choice, regardless of whether it's cooked or raw. Try eating a combination of the two for maximum health benefits.

Why you shouldn't cut the ends off asparagus? ›

It is not necessary to trim asparagus. On some spears, especially fresh, pencil-thin stalks, the woody ends may tenderize once cooked. But on larger stalks, the ends of the asparagus are often woody and dense—Which makes them difficult to chew, no matter how soft the asparagus is after cooking.

Can too much asparagus be bad for you? ›

What part of asparagus should you not eat? Most people trim off the tough, woody ends of asparagus spears before cooking or eating. Can you eat too much asparagus? There are no known side effects of eating too much asparagus, but in large quantities, the fiber in the vegetable may cause diarrhea, gas, or bloating.

Should asparagus be washed before cooking? ›

One thing you definitely don't want to do is wash asparagus before storing it—the added moisture will cause the spears to get slimy. When you're ready to cook, just give them a quick rinse under cool running water and pat them dry with a kitchen towel, as Pradhan recommends.

Which is better thin or thick asparagus? ›

While both types tasted equally sweet, nutty, and grassy, we expected the delicate-looking thin spears to be more tender. To our surprise, the thicker spears actually had the better texture (if only by a hair). The reason? The vegetable's fiber is slightly more concentrated in thinner spears.

What tastes better thin or thick asparagus? ›

Ferretti says there is little taste difference between thin and thick asparagus spears, but the thinner vegetables can be tougher to chew.

Is it better to eat asparagus raw or steamed? ›

To reap the greatest health benefits, consider incorporating both cooked and raw asparagus into your diet. That said, from a nutritional standpoint, you can't go wrong with either option.

How do you cook asparagus so it's not stringy? ›

How do you cook asparagus so it's not stringy? To prevent asparagus from being stringy, it's important to trim the tough woody parts off of the bottom of the asparagus spears and cook until perfectly tender. If it's overcooked, it can be stringy and soggy.

Are you supposed to eat the entire asparagus? ›

You can eat all parts of asparagus. I usually break off the bottom. You don't have to but that part is a little woody. If you want, you can use the bottoms in soup where you can cook them longer and/or cut it up very small.
